An opening that fills you with questions! (Book Beginnings)

It's Friday again and time for another Book Beginnings!! For those of you who are interested in doing this on your blog, check out Rose City Reader for details on how to join!

For this week I'm using the first 100 words or so from the book I got during the bookswap I hosted on my blog last week. It's an ARC of Frank Peretti's newest book, Illusion. I've read almost all of Peretti's books, so am eager to read this newest release.

Mandy was gone. She went quietly, her body still, though the raging pain of the burns could only have been eased by her loss of consciousness.
And Dane was at her bedside to see her go. The ICU physician said it was inevitable, only a matter of minutes once they removed the ventilator, and so it was. Her heart went into premature ventricular contractions, stopped, restarted momentarily, and then the line on the heart monitor went flat.

My Thoughts: Sounds like a kinda depressing opening. I definitely want to know who Mandy is, and how she became so badly burned, they took her off the ventilator to let her die. Not sure who Dane is at this point, either, but wanting to know! Peretti starts with an opening that will keep you reading for answers!

I'd love to hear what's the first hundred words or so of your current read or one you just received. Feel free to share in the comments! Are you liking the book so far? Was the first few lines enough to grip your attention? :-)

Wow, what a downer of an opening. One can hope it can't get worse than that.

Here's my Book Beginning.

That opener would definitely make me want to read the rest.

Hmm...sad indeed. Will the narrative detail the backstory leading up to that moment, or go forward from her death? Combination perhaps.

Here's my beginning:

It is a sad opening. I'm wondering where the story goes from there.

Really sad, but also a very good opening. You want to know both what happened before and what comes later.

That opening certainly catches your attention. It sounds sad and raises a lot of questions. It does make me curious about the characters and what their relationship is. Thanks for sharing.

Chris - Yes, it was a sobering beginning. But it also gets you reading--because you suddenly have SO many questions and your heart goes out to the characters.

Marie - Ohh, wonderful! Glad to hear your praises. I look forward to reading it!!

Kenzie - Oh, I know. Doesn't it?!

Amber - Yeah, those are my questions exactly. I'm excited to see how Peretti handles it!

Diana - Me too! Questions, questions!

Eva - True, true! Sad, but grips you!

DMS - Glad to share--these posts are always so much fun to put together! :-) Yes, an opening like this makes me eager to read the whole book and find out!
